LINEN 101: CARING FOR SUMMER'S FAVORITE FABRIC
Here's how we're keeping our summer staples wrinkle-free and vibrant all year long.
Only one thing in fashion is certain: When summer comes around, linen sales go up. The fabric, crafted from the fibers of a flax plant, is breathable, absorbent and quick-drying, making it perfect for warm weather. But it also requires special care to keep it looking and feeling fresh. Here are the tips and tricks we live by to love our linens long-term.
Washing: When it comes to washing linens, it’s best to be as cautious as possible. We recommend separating these items from other fabrics and keeping loads light. To avoid potential color bleeding, we also recommend separating lights from darks. Go for lukewarm water and a delicate cycle to prevent shrinking.
Drying: Air-drying your linens is the safest way to prevent shrinkage and damage. And really, what’s chicer than a clothesline? If air drying isn’t an option (for instance, if you’re working with large fabrics like bed sheets), remove your items from the dryer promptly to avoid intense wrinkles. Then, follow with a steam.
Storing: Linens store best in cool, dry environments away from direct sunlight. When you want easy access to your linens, we recommend hanging versus folding to reduce wrinkles. When storing them away during the colder seasons, opt for a canvas bag which will allow the fabric to breathe. Be careful with plastic and cardboard storage methods as these materials can cause the linen fibers to deteriorate.
Styling: While linen may seem difficult to care for, styling linens is simple. Nothing screams summer quite like a linen matching set — it’s easy to throw on and can be dressed up with a chic sandal or dressed down with a casual sneaker or loafer. We love this butter yellow set. A linen top paired with your favorite denim is another great way to summer-ize a classic outfit. This lime linen halter is one of our favorites right now.
